Uganda Martyrs University is pleased to welcome 15 students admitted under the second cohort of TAGDev 2.0, a programme under RUFORUM aimed at transforming African agricultural universities to meaningfully contribute to Africa’s growth and development. Of the 15 scholars, 5 are undergraduate students and 10 are postgraduate students, joining the University to pursue academic journeys that combine rigorous training with a strong commitment to community transformation.
During their orientation at the UMU Main Campus, the students shared glimpses of their diverse journeys, including stories of resilience from deserving communities and refugee backgrounds. These stories painted a vivid picture of determination and hope, reminding all present that behind every scholar admitted to the programme lies a story of perseverance, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief in the power of education to transform lives.
Addressing the students, Emmanuel Okalany, Representative from RUFORUM, and Dr. Robinah Nakabo, TAGDev 2.0 Programme Coordinator, encouraged them to embrace this opportunity and use it as a platform for personal transformation and meaningful impact in the communities from which they come. They emphasized that the programme is designed not only to build academic and technical competence, but also to shape scholars into agents of change within the agricultural sector and their wider communities.
Prof. Patrick E. Kyamanywa, Vice Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs University, welcomed the students to the University and challenged them to remain connected to their roots, make the most of their education, and return to their communities ready to make a difference. He encouraged both the undergraduate and postgraduate scholars to view their time at UMU as an opportunity to sharpen their skills, broaden their perspectives, and build networks that will support their growth long after graduation.
At UMU, we are proud to welcome young people whose education and experiences have the potential to contribute to the transformation of African agriculture. As this second cohort embarks on their studies — some at undergraduate level and others pursuing postgraduate training — they carry with them the aspirations of their communities and the promise of a more resilient, innovative agricultural future for the continent.
