Uganda Martyrs University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Patrick Edrin Kyamanywa, attended the inaugural Africa Higher Education for Transformation (AHEFT) Prize ceremony, held as part of the Higher Education Transformation Convening in Accra, Ghana. The event explored what a relevant, high-quality, impactful, and sustainable higher education system should deliver for Africa’s young people, under the theme “Reimagining Higher Education for Africa’s Human Capital Development.”
The AHEFT Prize is a first-of-its-kind annual award backed by a $500 million commitment from the Mastercard Foundation over its first decade, recognizing higher education institutions across Africa that are driving sustained, systemic, institution-wide transformation and expanding opportunities for young people. Five institutions were honoured in this inaugural cohort: Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering–2iE (Burkina Faso), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana), Muni University (Uganda), and the University of Rwanda.
Uganda Martyrs University proudly congratulates Muni University on being named Uganda’s representative among this year’s laureates. Muni University was recognized for creating effective pathways from education to employment for refugees and underserved youth, and, like each of the laureate institutions, will receive a $3 million prize to strengthen and scale the work for which it was recognized.
Professor Kyamanywa’s presence at the ceremony reflects Uganda Martyrs University’s continued engagement with the wider conversation on transforming higher education across the continent, and its solidarity with fellow Ugandan institutions being celebrated on the regional stage.
