Faculty of The Built Environment
The Faculty of the Built Environment is a multidisciplinary faculty offering programmes and courses in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Design and Building Technology.
With an emphasis on environmental conscious design (ECD), a key goal of the Faculty is to educate responsible professionals who can contribute to cultural and socio-economic development and change in East Africa and the global community through participation in design, construction and interpretation of built environments.
The Faculty recognises that in a continually changing world, professional experience and research are important, academic faculty contribute to teaching and scholarship in areas related to their research interest, serving to enrich the learning environment of the Faculty.
Programmes in the Faculty are designed to foster critical and creative thinking, enabling students and graduates to engage with the environmental, social, and aesthetic challenges of the contemporary milieu.
Most courses in the Faculty are taught through a problem-based integrated teaching approach, that integrate design with the techniques and practices of construction, and building services, all within a theoretical and historical context, keeping in mind human needs (social, physiological and cultural).
Courses also engage with the core skills of architectural education: Critical Reflection, Communication and Collaboration.
The flagship undergraduate programme in the Faculty, the Bachelor of Environmental Design (Honours) is the basis for academic study in the Faculty, and serves as the basic programme leading into professional Masters’ degrees in Architecture, landscape architecture and urban design.
It serves as Part I of the three-part professional programme in architecture, and is a prerequisite for the Master of Architecture (Professional) programme (Part II).
Both courses are recognised and validated by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), the Uganda Society of Architects (USA), and the Architects Registration Board (ARB).
The programme is also validated by the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), and on the CAA list of Qualifications in Architecture Recommended for Recognition.
