Bachelor of Science in Economics and Natural Resources Management
Applications for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Economics & Natural Resource Management Program are invited. This is a fulltime program that will run at our Nkozi main campus for three years. The program is offered by the Faculty of Business Administration and Management, with the support of the DALILA – Development of new Academic Curricula on Sustainable Energies and Green Economy in Africa project. This project is supported by the European Commission. The program intends to equip students with state of the art competences that will make them employable in the private sector, by NGOs, and even the public sector and to enable them establish and manage businesses in natural resources related areas.
Students on this program will receive training from highly competent staff of Uganda Martyrs University and from two European universities i.e. University of Cardiz in Spain and Sapienzia University in Italy. To support the development of the required competences, theory learnt in class will be complemented with the practical applications learnt through laboratory experiments, corporate visits to existing local businesses and placements with relevant organisations. The university will work with employers and local business to ensure work experience opportunities for students. 3 best students each year will have an internship in Europe i.e. two weeks in Spain and two weeks in Italy. During this time those students will receive additional lectures, technical visits, and seminars by European stakeholders operating in the renewable energy fields.
To support the students’ development of entrepreneurial abilities, additional specialized training will be given to enable students start businesses from scratch. There are two Business accelerator companies that will support the university in this endeavour i.e. Sahara Ventures (from Tanzania and INOMA from Italy). These will facilitate an intense course on how to successfully start a business which aims at equipping selected students with the foundational skills, knowledge and resources required to build their start-ups. The course will focus on developing an entrepreneurial mindset writing business plans & design thinking and prototyping.
To support the employability of students who graduate from this program, information about local job opportunities and financing opportunities/facilities for startups will be provided. Students will also be supported by way of dissemination of adequate information about local job opportunities and financing opportunities for natural resources related businesses. Graduates will therefore be able to find jobs or to start their own businesses. A web platform will be created to connect students with local enterprises. The “Employability Hub” will have two different sections: a web-based portal for sharing information about students’ placement and network events.
Application Requirements & Procedure
The B.Sc. in Economics and Natural Resources Management programme targets direct high school leavers, as well as diploma holders. Candidates seeking admission to this program should have the following: (i) The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least six credits of which two credits must be in English and Mathematics. (ii) At least two principal passes at the same sitting of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) in a combination involving: Economics, Geography, Agriculture, Mathematics, Entrepreneurship, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Diploma holders seeking admission to this program should: (i) Have passed Mathematics and English with at least a credit the the Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent (ii) Have done a combination involving Economics, Entrepreneurship, Geography, Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics at UACE and passed at least one of the subjects at Principle level (iii) Have obtained a diploma (at credit/distinction level) in the relevant field from a recognized higher institution of learning.
