Uganda Martyrs University, Under the TAGDEV 2.0 Programme, Trains Over 270 Out-of-School Students in Entrepreneurship at St. Mathias Mbuye Agricultural College

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) hosted an Out-of-School Entrepreneurship Training at St. Mathias Mbuye Agricultural College. The training is implemented under the TAGDEV 2.0 programme, with support from the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM).

More than 270 students pursuing certificate and diploma courses at the school turned up for the training, which continues a series of trainings launched by the University in August 2026 for vocational institutions benefiting from the programme.

What the students learned

Participants were taken through three key areas:

  • Financial management: keeping records, managing income and expenses, and making sound money decisions.
  • Business strategy: identifying opportunities, understanding customers and markets, and planning for growth.
  • Fundraising: finding and approaching sources of funding to turn ideas into viable ventures.

The students were also placed in groups and tasked with developing fundable projects, giving them a chance to put the lessons into practice straight away. Their strong turnout shows how keen young people are to build entrepreneurial skills alongside their technical training.

About the programme

TAGDev 2.0 runs from 2023 to 2033 and seeks to strengthen universities and TVET institutions while equipping young people with practical, entrepreneurial and agricultural skills. Uganda Martyrs University joined the RUFORUM TAGDev 2.0 consortium in 2023. Combining technical training with business skills helps students see themselves not only as future employees but also as job creators.

Uganda Martyrs University thanks RUFORUM for its support, and the St. Mathias Mbuye Agricultural College, including the administration, instructors and students, for hosting the training and for their enthusiastic participation.
