Background to ACALISE
ACALISE is one of 24 Centres of Excellence in Eastern and Southern Africa under the African Centres of Excellence
(ACE II) project, supported by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) through eight regional
governments. Hosted at Uganda Martyrs University, ACALISE has been directly financed by the Government of
Uganda through a World Bank loan. The primary objective of ACALISE is to produce highly motivated, ethically
oriented experts in agroecology and livelihood systems to address agricultural, nutritional, and environmental
challenges in the region. The ACALISE project is structured around four main pillars: Learning Excellence, Research
Excellence, Excellence in Governance and Administration and Sustainability. The launch and handover therefore
marks the culmination of the African Centre for Agroecology and Livelihood Systems (ACALISE) project, a
cornerstone of excellence in agroecology and livelihood systems since its inception in 2017. The event also offers a
moment to reflect on ACALISE’s achievements and look forward to the future contributions of the newly launched
facilities to the University and the region.
