Description
The project Shared Heritage Africa. Forgotten Masterpieces seeks to explore and reveal the complexity of architectural expansion in the 20th century in Africa that has only been partially dealt with – but plays a crucial role in embodying the collective memory of each society of its modernity through its built heritage. What are the characteristics, local influences and special features of modern buildings in African countries and how did they eventually shape European architecture again. Dedicated to the DOcumentation and COnservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the MOdern MOvement, DOCOMOMO
International (https://www.docomomo.com/), was established as a non-profit organization in 1988 with 71 international working parties, but so far only in four Africa countries: Morocco, Ghana, Angola and South Africa. DOCOMOMO Germany aims to help bring the importance of African Modern Architecture to the attention of the public, authorities, professionals and the educational community in Africa in order to promote the conservation of buildings and sites of the 20th Century in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
