Empowering chaplains in Uganda with essential knowledge, values and skills to enhance their work on spiritual and pastoral care

Background

This course targets all chaplains in Uganda serving in several institutions including but not limited to academic and other institutions including universities, vocations, and schools; hospitals, military units, prisons, corporations, and public and private entities.  The comprehensive program is tailored to address the evolving needs of chaplains in the ever-growing contemporary world, recognizing their critical role in nurturing individuals in their spiritual and emotional well-being.

Through theoretical insights, practical training, and experiential learning, participants are empowered with the diverse knowledge, skills, and support they need to fulfill their vital role as chaplains.

Course objectives

Enhancing Spiritual Care Skills: Provide chaplains with advanced training and skills in spiritual care, including counseling techniques, active listening, and pastoral support.  The acquired skills are meant to improve their spiritual and pastoral service to the people they serve.

Ethical and Moral Guidance: Offer guidance on navigating complex ethical and moral issues commonly encountered in institutional settings, helping chaplains provide wise counsel and support grounded in their religious or spiritual traditions.

Crisis Intervention Training: Provide chaplains with specialized training in crisis intervention techniques, enabling them to respond effectively to emergencies, trauma, and critical incidents within their communities.

Interfaith Dialogue and Collaboration: Foster interfaith dialogue, understanding, and collaboration among chaplains of different religious backgrounds, promoting mutual respect, cooperation, and shared learning.

Community Building and Outreach: Equip chaplains with strategies for community building, outreach, and engagement within their institutions, fostering a sense of belonging, connection, and support among the individuals they serve.

Self-Care and Resilience: Provide resources and support for chaplains to prioritize their self-care, resilience, and well-being, recognizing the emotional and spiritual demands of their role and the importance of maintaining personal balance and health.

Professional Development: Offer opportunities for ongoing professional development, including workshops, seminars, and networking events, to empower chaplains to stay updated on best practices, emerging trends, and innovations in spiritual care and chaplaincy.

Adapting to Contemporary Challenges: Address contemporary challenges facing chaplains, such as technological advancements, and changing social dynamics, by providing relevant tools, strategies, and insights for effective ministry and service.
